Tie up with BJP only electoral arrangement, says Edappadi

While alliances are formed based on circumstances, a party’s core principles remain permanent, Palaniswami said, adding that there should be no doubt about the AIADMK’s firm commitment to its own ideals.

CHENNAI: The AIADMK’s alliance with the Centre-ruling BJP was strictly an electoral arrangement, formed with the sole objective of winning the coming Assembly election by unseating the incumbent DMK regime, said party general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on Thursday.

The comment, which was incidentally made at a Christmas celebration event in Chennai, stands in sharp contrast with the BJP high command’s stated plans to get a share in power after the election.

While alliances are formed based on circumstances, a party’s core principles remain permanent, Palaniswami said, adding that there should be no doubt about the AIADMK’s firm commitment to its own ideals.

That he made these comments at a function organsied by the Christian community was a detail that was not lost on anyone.

Palaniswami assured that the AIADMK remains a party that works for minority communities whether in power or not, and vowed to always safeguard their rights. He also appealed to minority communities to support the AIADMK-led alliance in order to remove the DMK from power.

Addressing the community members, Palaniswami alleged that under the DMK regime headed by Chief Minister MK Stalin, there have not been any schemes that have benefited the minority communities in the past 50 months. There were several welfare schemes for minorities under his administration, which, however, are no longer available now, he added.

Palaniswami also launched a sharp attack against the ruling DMK, labelling it an “evil force”, a description originally used by party founder MG Ramachandran – and incidentally repeated by Vijay at the Erode meet on Thursday.
