CHENNAI: A youth from Assam, who clobbered a five-year-old boy from Bihar to death for resisting his sexual assault attempts and dumped his body in bushes near Sriperumbudur earlier this month, was arrested by the police.

The accused, Bhol Dev (22), confessed to killing the child, son of a migrant worker couple from Bihar, and led the police team to the area where the body was dumped.

The incident occurred in Karumankazhani village near Sriperumbudur, about 50 km from the city.

The boy’s parents, who live in a guest worker settlement, approached the Sriperumbudur police after he went missing early this month. When they reviewed CCTV footage from the neighbourhood, the police found that the child was last seen walking with Dev. Following this, the police secured Dev for questioning.

He initially claimed innocence, but after sustained interrogation, he confessed to the murder. Officials said he took the boy to a secluded spot and attempted to coerce the child into doing sexual acts.

When the child raised alarm and tried to flee, Dev feared getting exposed. He chased and attacked the boy with a rock and killed him. He then dumped the child’s body and returned to his room.

Based on the information he provided, the police recovered the decomposed body on Saturday and sent it to the Sriperumbudur government hospital for autopsy.

Dev was arrested on murder charges, and a magistrate remanded him in judicial custody.
