HC moved to extend days for viewing Athi Varadhar
The Madras High Court has been moved seeking to forebear the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department from immersing the idol of ‘Lord Athi Varadhar’ in the temple tank on August 17 and extend the period for public view by another 48 days.

Chennai
Tamizharasi (78) of Ariyalur Districthas submitted in her public interest litigation that it was anticipated by the devotees that this ‘once in a 40 year event’ is most likely to see peoplecoming from several States seeking blessings of Athi Varadhar, but the gross negligence on crowd estimation have added to the poor management by the District Authorities.
Moreover, the non-intervention of the State Government in rectifying the same and applying course correction to take action as well as for not taking cognizance of the issue and act immediately by sending response teams with tactical background in crowd mismanagement have resulted in many devotees failing to get darshan of Athi Varadhar, the plea said.
Also, noting that the State Government has claimed providing Rs 29 crores to the District Collector, Kancheepuram for providing basic amenities and facilities for the devotees, the petition noted that it is uncertain as to how much of the resources have been deployed, allotted and used for smooth operation and crowd management. Ignorant approach towards crowd management had led to loss of life and property for several devotees, the plea added while seeking for a direction to extend the period of public view by another ‘mandalam’ period of 48 days.
The plea is set to be taken up for hearing on Wednesday.
