I am 30 years and have been having irregular periods apart from a sudden spurt in facial hair. Is this due to polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)? What are the other symptoms? What does the treatment involve? Narmada, Kilpauk

Polycystic ovarian syndrome or PCOS manifests in girls and women due to various reasons. Causes could vary from weight to genetic predisposition. I see girls as young as 14 with the syndrome and also those in the reproductive age group. The fight against PCOs is long as it requires constant follow up. Some of the symptoms of PCOS include weight gain, irregular periods, oily acne prone skin with excess facial hair. It warrants a visit to gynaecologist who further verifies through scan and blood tests. There is no standardised treatment of medication, as the factors vary with every case. — Dr Rajapriya Ayyappan, gynaecologist, Om fertility centre, Srinivas Priya Hospital, Perambur.

My wife and I are expecting our first child in November. We have been told that it could be a C-section delivery. We wanted to know under what conditions is C-section performed? Arvind G, Adambakkam

There are a number of conditions when a C-Section is performed: when the baby is in an abnormal position, the baby’s heartbeat goes low (foetal distress) and in cases of Cephalo-pelvic disproportion (CPD), when the capacity of the pelvis is inadequate to allow the foetus to negotiate the birth canal. Others likely to have a C-section are diabetic mothers with a big baby and those with antepartum haemorrhage (APH) or genital bleeding from 24th week till term. You can be assured that C-section in itself is not a worry. — Dr Kavya Krishna Kumar, Consultant Obstetrician- Gynaecologist, Motherhood.
